Drought in Russia

For hundreds of years, Russia has been the bread basket of Europe. However, by September of this year 2010, Russia has already lost 27% of its grain crop. This is Russia's  worst drought in over one hundred years. Things are so bad that they have banned exports of wheat and they may be forced to import it.

Well, this has been a particularly bad year worldwide. Australia is in the middle of an extreme drought right now. Paradoxically, Canada lost 36% of its wheat crop due to excess rain.

This August, Russian President Medvedev spoke of global warming in Russia with Moscow getting a record high of 102°F. In our July newsletter, we spoke of extremes in weather, with summers being hotter and winters being colder.

The Russian wheat crisis has sent crop prices soaring. Wheat that sold for $4.50/bushel in June 2010 nearly doubled to $8/bushel in August 2010.

As if things were not bad enough, a new wheat stem rust called ug99 is destroying wheat crops in Africa.

Famines in the Bible

There have been great famines in the past. We read in the Bible of seven years of drought during the time of Joseph.

Genesis 45:6 For these two years hath the famine been in the land: and yet there are five years, in the which there shall neither be earing nor harvest.

By the time Israel was established in the promised land, the prophet Elijah prayed it would not rain for 3 1/2 years.

James 5:17 Elijah was a man of like passions with us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain; and it rained not on the earth for three years and six months.

Jesus told us that in the future there were going to be famines. Probably due to extremes in weather as we are seeing now.

Luke 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.

This world is now filled with wars, earthquakes, and famines, but this is said to be the beginning of sorrows.

Matt 23:7-8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

God speaks of a great famine in the future.

Rev 6:5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, "Come!" I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, "A quart of wheat for a day's wages, and three quarts of barley for a day's wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!"

The bible says that a quart of wheat will sell for the equivalent of a day's wage. With the minimum wage in the United States currently at $7.25/hour that would be 7.25 X 8 or $58 for a quart of wheat, not a bushel. Get ready for what is coming!
