Oil Spill

On June 5, 2010 people started to see tar balls on Pensacola, Florida's white sandy beaches. The white sand will soon be covered in black sticky goo.

However, far beneath the waves, we have an environmental disaster. The Louisiana Deep Water Horizon oil spill threatens to use up all available oxygen.

Already the Gulf of Mexico has dead zones; adding organic matter in the form of oil makes things worse because bacteria will eat the oil droplets and use up oxygen in the process turning the ocean anoxic.

Thin films of oil on top prevent new oxygen in the air from mixing with water. A small amount of oil on the surface can seal off large amounts of ocean. The end result is that animals that need oxygen like fish will die.

Oil Spill

Oil boom on the shore

In an attempt to solve the problem on the shore, they used oil booms to try to keep oil away from the coasts.

Underwater they used oil dispersants trying to avoid the oil getting to the surface. The idea is to get the oil and water to mix into a kind of mayonnaise. Oil dispersants, chemicals like Corexit 9500, are poisons. They can travel up the food chain and end up on your dinner plate. Sadly, young fish mistake the chemical-coated oil globules for food.

If the oil spill continues it will turn truly catastrophic. What we are hoping for is a miracle. Nothing seems to work now. Methods that were tried like Top Kill and Junk Shot were failures. Latest predictions say the oil spill could go on until December. In fact, it could go on for decades in a worst case scenario. The situation is spiraling out of control.

Death of the Sea

God created our wonderful world, but we are slowly destroying it. The British Petroleum (BP) oil spill in Louisiana is but one example. The Bible foretells that one day all life in the sea will die. Actually, this death of the sea is a gradual process. You can read about this in the book of Revelation.

Revelation 8:8-9
And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

In Rev 8 we see that 1/3 of the ocean becomes dead, but by Rev 16, all life in the ocean is gone. We do not know exactly how it happens, but we imagine that it is a catastrophe of some kind. This is important because the ocean produces 80% of our oxygen.

Revelation 16:3-5
And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus.

One hundred years ago, these words seemed preposterous due to the immense size of the ocean. However, we now know that fish mostly live along the shores. Therefore pollution from land affects them more. This oil spill is showing us that these words in the Holy Bible which once did seem impossible will happen. Now we realize that there is very little time left. Christ is coming soon.
