Talents

Let us look at - The Parable of the Talents and what it teaches us.

Matthew 25:14-18
For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money.

God gives us abilities and we need to use them to further His work here on earth while we are alive and able to do so.

Please do remember, that a gold talent is equivalent to millions of dollars in our own money. In fact, the five gold talents would be about twelve million dollars right now.

Notice the reaction of the master:

Matthew 25:19-30
After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them. “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’  His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’ “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest.   So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents. ‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Money

Oftentimes we are told that it is evil to want to have some money. Actually, here is the verse we use.

1 Timothy 6:9-11
Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation and become ensnared by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. By craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee from these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.

Funny, how it is the - love of money. Having a bit of cash is not wrong. God wants us to use our resources. Recall the parable of the talents and try to be wise.

He certainly does not want us to squander what He has given us. Definitely, I would say of our resources... TIME is the most precious one. In fact, we are on earth only a short period of time and then we are gone.

What is the best use of our resources? I believe it is to help other people follow God and learn the good news.

Please remember the gold confiscation act of 1933 when people were required by the federal government to turn in their gold coins. This was during the depth of the great depression and people were forced to comply by a government that was intrusive.

It is best that we not grow too attached to the material things around us. They can be taken away.

God tells us:

Matthew 6:19-21
Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

God can take us to paradise in the third heaven where there is no crime. The water and air are pure. A wonderful place for us.
